  • All the #sabbath feels around here. We cleared a few hours, fixed our favorite food, and sat down to a face to face. Sabbath has come to mean real rest and genuine gratitude. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But it hasn’t always been this way. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When we first got married, Sunday’s were complicated for us. We knew we needed rest but had no idea how to find it or practice it, and quite honestly we had no idea what it even was. But we knew we needed to figure it out, and we knew the Word needed to shape it. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tomorrow my newest digital study Learning Sabbath launches. And it’s all about this very journey. We look at God’s design for work and rest, the OT commands regarding sabbath, and the way Jesus reinterprets those commands in the NT. And, as a fun bonus, Austin and I share all about how we started this cheese board tradition. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’d love for you to join me for this study!   • If you’re new here, there are a few things you should know about me. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I LOVE the Bible. Few things get me as excited as exegetical study and theology. I love it, study it, teach it, and am formed by it. I went to Bible school and seminary, but spend 5 mins with me and you’ll know that I’m just an average woman and I believe everyone can and should do the real deal kind of Bible study. In the studies I write and teach, we look at the original languages (Greek & Hebrew), literary structure, historic background and all that good nerd stuff. And it’s great! And I promise, it’s accessible (if I can do it, you can). ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Also... for the record? I’m a Bible teacher and decidedly not a brand. That’s why you won’t find me monetizing my book recommendations or doing the sexy marketing stuff that you’re probably used to seeing elsewhere. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And I want you to study with me! I’ve written and teach digital Bible studies and it’s so fun to have people work through the Word with me. Digital study members have access to the entire library of digital studies — that’s ten studies on books like Philippians and lamentations, and on topics like the meta-narrative and sabbath rest — and enrollment is open twice a year.   • Those Friday feels 🐶✨☺️
  • Worst day of the month. 🐶🚿
  • Fleeting and therefore faithful.✨ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Magnolia bloom is here and I almost can’t get enough. As a newish southerner, these massive blossoms still drop my jaw as we round each corner on our walk with the dog. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What amazes me is how short their little lives are, and yet how that’s exactly what makes them magnificent. They stretch out their petals toward the sky as if in an act of worship before they suddenly drift off into fading glory. They gift us all their loveliness and offer up every ounce of beauty before their petals fall to the ground. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I was reminded yesterday of our need to be attentive to the lovely things (read @hannah_._anderson’s recent post about peonies — my very favorite flower, btw) and how the fading flowers remind us of our own mortal frame. In this season of hard and joyful work, I want my posture to be like the magnolia blossoms — lovely and outstretched and poured out to the very last ounce until He calls me home. One if the joys of God’s Kingdom reality is that we don’t have to save up energy or resources or gifts for the next life. We can gladly pour it all out — every ounce of worship that our humble frames have to offer — in the worship of God and the in joining Him in building His Kingdom. We can be faithful today not in spite of our fleeting form, but precisely because of it. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Maybe today when you see a magnolia blossom, ask God to give you the desire to be all-out and all-in for His Kingdom purposes. I know I daily have to ask Him what this looks like, and ask Him to shed my worldly perspective of what it means to be successful and secure. So let’s ask Him — what does He want us to give up? Where does He want us to lean in? Where does He want to expand our worship? What new territory of our hearts does He want to claim or reclaim? How can we pour ourselves out like drink offerings, as Paul says in Philippians, all for the cause of Christ until He calls us home? Because we are fleeting, how can we be faithful today?
  • It’s the hard weeks that make this meal all the richer. As I prepped this board, I whispered to myself, “look for His goodness.” And you know what happens when you look? You see it.
