The ACTUAL fruit of the Spirit:
Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self Control

We are first of all worshipers. We may think that

We are first of all worshipers.

We may think that because we’re “in ministry” we’re here to put together the worship service. We may be momentarily duped into believing that we’re here to facilitate worship rather than to offer ourselves in worship to our King. But be not mistaken: we are first worshipers.

We are first servants.

Maybe we went to seminary and Bible school and find ourselves in charge of filling the coffee pot or taking out the trash or cleaning toilets or wiping noses in the nursery or in the drive through line waiting for the donut order with a v fussy baby in the back (it me! 🙋‍♀️). Before we fool ourselves into thinking that we have “more” to offer, the best offering we make to our King is the service he has asked of us and the task he’s out in front of us. We are first of all servants.

If I sit at the feet of the world, I’ll believe

If I sit at the feet of the world, I’ll believe that the light is growing dimmer and dimmer, and sink into the pit of despair. I’ll succumb to hopelessness, thinking there is nothing I can do to crack open that dawn. If I sit at the feet of Jesus, I’ll believe that hope is on the horizon because our King is on his way, and that every broken thing will soon be made right. I’ll pray like he taught me and work like he did: on earth as it is in heaven.

I love being away on vacation, but gosh do I love coming home.

We just got back from the sweetest little trip to Charleston (queue Alexis Rose). And I’m coming back reminded of a few good things:

Ministries that can’t survive in your absence aren’t Spirit-fueled. Gratefully, all of ours are. We left, and no one needed us. That’s God at work in his church.

The online world can be so loud, but when you’re quiet it continues on. This means 1) in-person relationships are the ones we have the most actual influence in and deserve our best and first attention. And 2) lament also shows up in-person: in phone calls and text messages to make sure your people are alright. Don’t buy into the narrative that taking a stand is the same thing as mourning with those who mourn. Both are important, and it’s important to know the difference.

God first, marriage second, kids third, local church fourth, community fifth. Don’t @ me.

Simple joys can fuel life. Like keeping oil in the gears. We don’t need new earrings or small plates or pretty patios but holy moly do they ever buoy the spirit.

May God give us exactly what we need — not poverty so that we’re tempted to steal, not wealth so that we forget our God who formed us. (Prov. 30:8)
