Birthday Books We Pull Out Every Year
Over the years we’ve started a little tradition in our house that my kids now look forward to every year. When someone has a birthday coming up, we pull out all of our birthday-themed picture books and put them in a little basket in the living room.
I found the basket at a thrift store years ago. It’s actually just an old magazine basket, but it works perfectly for displaying picture books. When birthday month arrives, I fill it with our birthday stories and set it where the kids can easily grab them.
It’s a simple thing, but it makes birthdays feel even more festive. The kids notice the basket right away and start pulling out the books to read together. Sometimes we read them during our normal read-aloud times. Sometimes they just flip through them on their own while waiting for dinner to cook.
It’s become one of those small family traditions that adds a little extra joy to the week of celebrations.
Here are the birthday books we reach for every year. You can find all of them together in my list here!

A Simple Birthday Tradition
If you’re looking for a simple way to make birthdays feel a little more special in your home, a birthday book basket is a fun place to start.
You don’t need anything fancy. A thrifted basket, a small stack of picture books, and a spot where your kids can easily reach them is all it takes.
When birthday month comes around, pull them out and let the celebration begin a little early.
It’s a small thing, but in our house it has become one of those traditions the kids now expect every year.
