Sweetening Up Sundays: How our Ministry Family Found Restored Joys on Sunday Morning

In our home, Sunday mornings are busy. As a ministry family, Sundays are full of preparation, conversations, and service—and yet we want our kids to see Sundays not as hectic, but as joyful. That’s why you’ll often hear the refrain in our house: “Sundays are the best day of the week! We get to worship with God’s people. What a joy it is to go to church today!”

Repeating these words aloud has actually shaped our own hearts too. Instead of approaching Sunday as just another work day, it reorients us to the truth: Sunday is a blessing. It’s an opportunity to gather with the body of Christ and worship Him together.

A Sweet Tradition

To make Sunday mornings feel a little more special, we’ve introduced a simple routine in our home: a special breakfast. Nothing fancy—just something sweet we don’t usually eat during the week. Often, it’s cinnamon rolls. Sometimes I’ll grab a can from the grocery store, and you know what? That’s just as special as it needs to be. The point isn’t perfection, it’s celebration.

But if I have a little more time, I’ll make homemade cinnamon rolls with a few tweaks to keep them from being too sugary (here’s the recipe I use!). Here’s what I do:

  • Cut the sugar in the dough by half.
  • Use half the sugar in the filling when rolling them up.
  • Pour ½ cup of heavy cream over the top before baking.

The cream works its magic in the oven, and the rolls come out fluffy and tender—just right for a Sunday morning treat.

Why It Matters

These little touches aren’t about the food itself. They’re about setting apart the Lord’s Day as something different, something joyful. When our kids see and taste that Sunday is a day of delight, they learn that worship is a gift. And when we, as parents, choose to savor it with them, our hearts are reminded of the same truth.

So, cinnamon rolls have become a sweet way of saying in our home: Sundays really are the best day of the week.
