Thanksgiving Read Alouds: Picture Books that Foster Gratitude

Now that Halloween is past, I am enthusiastically turning my attention to Thanksgiving! This stretch of November through early December might be my favorite time of the year — it’s cool outside, we can to make all the fall and festive foods and crafts, and yet there’s not the pressing stress that sometimes comes with Christmas.

During this stretch of the calendar, we read a lot of picture books. Even as my children get older and can read on their own, we still make it a habit to read picture books aloud each day. I know not everyone does this or agrees with this approach, but I think read alouds help foster wonder and curiosity. Just think about how much you get out of a picture book — a deeper meaning than your preschooler is comprehending. Your older children will grow in understanding the different virtues and layers described in a particular story, and might even be able to apply those lessons to their daily lives in a way that they wouldn’t have been able to do the first time you read that book to them (when they were itty bitty!).

Here are some of my favorite picture books of Thanksgiving! Some of them are historical in nature, describing what it was like to sail on the Mayflower or meet the pilgrims for the first time. Others are about gratitude, telling stories that remind us that we have so much to be thankful for. All of them are sweet!
