November is here, which means I'm enthusiastically November is here, which means I'm enthusiastically pulling out our Thanksgiving picture books! One of my favorite ways to mark the changing seasons with my kids is through our read-alouds. Even as my children get older and become independent readers, I still love gathering them around a good picture book. And Thanksgiving books are some of my favorites! Some teach us about the history of the holiday and the people who came before us. Others celebrate the beauty of autumn, the joy of gathering around a table, or the simple goodness of sharing what we have. I think good books have a wonderful way of cultivating wonder in our children. They help them notice things they might otherwise overlook, and give us opportunities to talk about the goodness of God in ordinary life. After all, gratitude isn't simply something we want our children to express when they receive a gift. It's a way of seeing the world that we want to help them cultivate. We want them to recognize that every good gift comes from the hand of a generous God. I've gathered our favorite Thanksgiving read-alouds in one place, from beautiful historical picture books to cozy autumn stories that my kids ask to read again and again. **Comment BOOKS and I'll send you the full list!** And tell me, what's one Thanksgiving picture book your family loves? I'm always looking for another good one!
We are so excited to bring these BACK! The Christ We are so excited to bring these BACK! The Christ at the Center Cards help your child see that Jesus isn't just on the pages of the Gospels, He's declared in every book of Scripture. The Old Testament anticipates Him, and the New Testament announces that He is the King we have all been waiting for. Launching Friday at @tinytheologians!
Sometimes gratitude comes in waves — it feels like Sometimes gratitude comes in waves — it feels like the natural response to good things happening. But what about what gratitude feels unnatural? When we can’t (or don’t want to) think of things to be grateful for? Every good gift comes from his hand (James 1:17). This is a biblical truth I hang onto when gratitude feels out of reach. Everting I can see and every unseen thing represented by what I can see is a gift from God. I’m not entitled to it. I don’t deserve it. It’s not owed to me. It’s a gift. All of it is grace. Gratitude is actually an antidote for so many vices we experience regularly. It changes us. When we practice seeing the world as gift and not as something we deserve, we’ll find some of the perennial struggles of our hearts shifting. Melting. Changing. Entitlement begins to give way to humility. Comparison loses some of its grip. Our instinct to complain is challenged by our growing awareness of God's kindness. This doesn't mean that grateful Christians never experience disappointment, grief, or discontentment. Scripture gives us plenty of examples of faithful people who lamented their circumstances before the Lord! But gratitude DOES remind us that our circumstances, however difficult, never tell the whole story of God's goodness. That's why gratitude is worth practicing even when we don't instinctively feel thankful. We are training our hearts to recognize what has always been true: God is good, and everything good in our lives comes from him. Which of these five do you most need gratitude to challenge in your heart right now?
Did you know that practicing gratitude can actuall Did you know that practicing gratitude can actually help interrupt anxious thought patterns? There is something remarkable about the way God has built into the design of our minds. (I learned this from @annvoskamp recently when she taught on the value of gratitude): when we intentionally turn our attention toward things for which we are grateful, we can begin to loosen the grip of anxious rumination. We can't hold gratitude and anxiety simultaneously. Gratitude doesn't make our troubles disappear, but it can help redirect our attention away from our fears. In Philippians 4, Paul tells believers not to be anxious, but to instead bring their requests before God with thanksgiving -- God's commands are always for our benefit! Paul doesn't tell us to wait until our circumstances improve to give thanks. He doesn't tell us to resolve our anxieties before we approach the Lord. He tells us to bring our very real concerns to God, accompanied by gratitude. Why? Because thanksgiving reminds us of what anxiety so often causes us to forget. 🍁That God has been faithful. 🍁That he is providing for us even now. 🍁That his goodness is not dependent on our circumstances. 🍁That the God who has cared for us in the past is the same God who holds our future. This is one of the reasons I think it's so important to practice gratitude, especially when it doesn't come naturally (and it doesn't to me, honestly). When you find yourself spiraling into worry, take a moment. Take a deep breath (no, really ... it's so helpful). And then thank God for the blessings you notice around you: your kids laughing, the cold water in your water bottle, the fall chill, the slippers that keep your feet cozy, the sunlight slanting through the branches. You may not feel instantly different. Your circumstances may not change at all. But gratitude is doing something important in your heart. It's teaching you to remember the goodness of God, even when life feels uncertain. And sometimes, remembrance is exactly what our anxious hearts need.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the relation I've been thinking a lot lately about the relationship between our habits and our affections. We often assume that we do the things we love. And that's true! But the reverse is also true: the things we repeatedly do can shape what we come to love. In other words? Our attention is formative. And this is one of the reasons I think the ordinary, sometimes unremarkable discipline of reading Scripture matters so much. Not because checking off another day in our Bible reading plan earns us favor with God. Not because consistency itself makes us holy. But because when we open God's Word, we're placing ourselves before the truth of who He is. We're learning His character. Remembering His faithfulness. Seeing His goodness. And by the work of the Holy Spirit, growing in our affection for Him. This is also something I want to remember as I disciple my children: We're not simply establishing routines so that our kids will grow up knowing how to have a quiet time. We're helping them develop habits of turning to the God who is worthy of their love, trust, and delight! What a privilege that is! The goal isn't to become people who are really good at religious routines. It's to become people who genuinely love God. And sometimes that love grows in the ordinary, repeated practice of opening His Word, even on the days we don't particularly feel like it. So here's a question to reflect on today: your habits are teaching you what to love. What are yours teaching you?
