Just as He Said | Day XIII

Isaiah 53:12

Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the many,
and He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
because He poured out His soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet He bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Luke 23:32-33

Two others, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with Him. And when they came to the place that is called The Skull, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on His right and one on His left.

Reflect

The King of kings died a criminal’s death. He was strung up to die a public, brutal, shame-filled death between two criminals. The One who wrote the Law of God on the hearts of His people was condemned to die as a law-breaker; the One who enjoyed eternal life in perfect, Trinitarian unity with the Father and the Spirit was appointed to die.

The wonder of our God is that He died a criminal’s death undeservingly. We have – all of us – broken God’s perfect and holy Law. We do deserve a criminal’s death, but He died in our stead. And through His criminal death He gained for us an eternal inheritance of eternal life. Though His death, He paid our debt. Through His life, He won our life. That all who believe in Him may not sink into the darkness of eternal death, but be raised to life in the Son. Just as He said.

Pray

Consider that Jesus, the only true Innocent, died a sinner’s death between two known law-breakers. Thank Him that He made a way for known sinners – you and I – to be forgiven.
