Theology Books for Kids (round one)!

If you’ve been around here for any length of time you’ve likely heard me say that I believe strongly that kids are theologians and can learn so much from a young age. This is why it is so important for us as parents to put the right books in their hands! We can give them a big view of God from the youngest age, laying a foundation for them for a life of faith, Lord willing.

Austin and I have been intentional about the books we put on our girls’ shelves for a few reasons. First, we want them to know that the Bible is exciting and interesting, and so we choose books that represent Scripture, God, Jesus, and more in a way that is both true and engaging. And second, we want our girls to learn to solo play! This is perhaps a less spiritual reason, but I want my girls to go read books on their own while I’m cooking dinner or working. This means all their books need to be safe for free reign! Another reason to choose books intentionally!

One of my favorite parts of my job is reading and review children’s Christian books. I’m working on an entire series of gift guides/book lists for kids. This is round one! You can see the entire list here, or check out each post as it releases!

The Friend Who Forgives Storybook: A true story about how Peter failed and Jesus forgave

Bible storybook that points young children to Jesus, the friend who forgives. Do you ever talk before you think? Mess up? Let others down? That’s what Peter did, again and again and again, and it led him to abandoning his best friend, Jesus. Peter loved Jesus. He felt terrible when he pretended not to know him. He thought all was lost when Jesus died. But after Jesus rose from the dead, he went and found Peter and forgave him. He explained that his death took the punishment for all of Peter’s mistakes and that his resurrection showed that the penalty was lifted. Peter spent the rest of his life telling people that if they put their trust in Jesus, they could be forgiven too―again and again and again. This book points children to Jesus, the friend who will forgive them again and again and again. Makes a great book for Lent and Easter.

Jesus Saves: The Gospel for Toddlers

Every generation needs to hear and believe the good news. Even the youngest children need to know, from the time they are in diapers, that there is a God who made them, loves them, and is calling them to turn from their sins and trust in him. The rhythmic, repetitive style of the story will make the content memorable for toddlers.

  1. We have most of the „tales that tell the truth“ series books, but the friend who forgives is certainly a favourite! Our most-recommended of the series is „the garden, the curtain, and the cross“, because it illustrates the fall, separation, and reconciliation so well! We also love the series „do great things for God“ all about different missionaries and (parts of) their stories.
